Put on side A of Mainland Madinina and “Googoo Gaga” is the second thing you’ll hear. The next song Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul have shared, “From Healer to Dealer”, sits at the start of side B. Both are out now. The full album, their second together, comes on February 5, 2027, a few weeks before the European and North American dates get underway.

What the record sleeve tells us

The order on the sleeve has “Restless” first and two more tracks after “Googoo Gaga” before you turn the record over. “From Healer to Dealer” is fifth of twelve. Side D closes with “Dad or Alive”, “Rite of Passage” and “I’m Lost”, so the two advance tracks leave a fair bit of the record to discover in February.

The duo described “Googoo Gaga” in terms of ordinary days spent looking after a small child. You can see echoes of family in the names “Stepmother” and “Dad or Alive”. It goes all the way to the title on the cover. Pupul’s family links are to mainland China and Hong Kong. Madinina is the Indigenous name for Martinique, where Adigéry’s family has roots.

Pull up the credits for 2022’s Topical Dancer and you’ll see another Adigéry. Christiane is credited on “Ich Mwen”, along with Charlotte, Pupul and David and Stephen Dewaele. The Dewaele brothers, who work as Soulwax, helped write and produce that album. They are back as co-producers here. The earlier credit is worth a look for anyone following how family has figured in the pair’s work over the two records.

Check your city before the presale

The artist presale opens on November 11 at 10am local time in most cities. In Belgium and Warsaw it starts a day earlier, also at 10am. The duo’s tour page sends you to their mailing list for presale access. General sale is November 13 at 10am local time. Check the date as well as the clock if you’re picking between two cities.

Cologne’s February 21 show comes a little over two weeks after the record. London is on March 4 and Warsaw on March 13, with Los Angeles following on March 23. The wait between buying a ticket and hearing the album is longer than the gap between the release and those first concerts. For now, the two tracks are enough to find where the tour takes you on the sleeve, even if you’re still waiting to hear the rest.
