Lyrics to My People

My people come from Oklahoma
On my mother's side
Louisiana on my father's side
They are hard working people
Each generation is a little better off
Than the one before
In the things of the world only

In the matters of the heart and soul
Some I could tell you
Others thought I wouldn't know

My people had to toss and tumble
almost everyone
No single one of us born tried and true
That is my observation
Each generation is a little better off
Than the one before
In the things of the world only

In the matters of the heart and soul
Some I could tell you
Others thought I wouldn't know

In the matters of the heart and soul
I want to know about my people
In the matters of the heart and soul
Where they stand and where they fall
